General information about SPICE I-kernels
=========================================

   In the SPICE system, I-kernels describe how an instrument is mounted
   to the instrument platform. I-kernels may also contain instrument
   field-of-view specifications, principal axes specifications, etc.

   The I-kernel mounting alignment, platform orientation, along with
   knowledge of the spacecraft position (SP kernel) and instrument
   pointing (C kernel), allows the user to use SPICELIB to calculate
   the pointing of instruments. The data contained in I-kernel files
   can be accessed and manipulated by a collection of FORTRAN 77
   subroutines which are part of the SPICELIB library. It is used in
   conjunction with other data. The SPICELIB subroutines can be
   integrated into user application programs. The SPICE system toolkit
   for a number of computer platforms or information regarding how it
   can be obtained is located in the SOFTWARE subdirectory of the main
   directory of this dataset.

   Refer to the KERNEL.REQ document provided with the toolkit or
   available from the NAIF Node of PDS if SPICE toolkit is not included
   with this data set to get more information on how to access I-kernel
   data.

Mars Odyssey (M01) I-kernels provided on this volume
====================================================

   All files are in IEEE text format and must be copied using ftp ASCII
   transfer to any non-UNIX workstation. The following Odyssey I-Kernel
   files are provided on this volume (only name portion of the file
   name is shown; the extension of all file names is ".ti"):

           m01_marie_vNN Odyssey Mars Radiation Environment Experiment
                           (MARIE) IK file containing instrument
                            mounting alignment and FOV geometry
                            parameters;

           m01_themis_vNN Odyssey Thermal Emission Imaging System
                            (THEMIS) IK file containing instrument
                            mounting alignment, detectors, optics,
                            and FOV geometry parameters;

     If multiple versions of an IK file are provided for an instrument,
     always use the latest version (unless earlier version is needed
     for some special reasons.)

Mars 2001 Odyssey IK Naming Schema
==================================

   The Odyssey IK file naming schema is as follows:

           m01_IIIII_vNN.ti

   where
           IIIII is the instrument name (example: ``themis'',
                            ``grs'', ``ns'', ``hend'', etc.);

           NN is the file version (example: ``01'' for
                            Version 0.1);

Kernel File Details
===================

   The most detailed description of the data in an IK file is
   provided in metadata included inside the description area of
   the file. This information can be viewed using any text editor
   program.

Important Note Regarding GRS, NS, and HEND IK
=============================================

   No IK files for GRS, NS, and HEND are provided in this dataset
   because this type of SPICE kernel does not seem to be needed
   to support geometry computations for these instruments.
